In order to complete democratization of governance in Liberia, the chair of the House Committee on Elections and Inauguration, Thursday disclosed that intense discussions are underway for chieftaincy elections to be held along with the mid-term senatorial elections scheduled in 2014.
Rep. Gabriel Smith said his committee has informed the Ministry of Internal Affairs and the National Elections Commission to plan for both elections to be held together in 2014.
He said funds for both categories of the elections would be secured in the multi-year budget and made available in ample time for NEC to adequately plan for these elections.
A local radio quoted Rep. Smith as urging authorities at NEC, the Ministry of Internal Affairs and LISGIS to work together in delineating electoral districts for the chieftaincy elections to complete the democratization structure of governance in the country.
Elections for paramount, clan and amalgamated (general) town chiefs were last held in October 1986.
And there are reports that many chiefs elected in1986 and are still surviving, cling to power while others have personally passed their gavels onto handpicked siblings.
