Deathly Drug Trafficking

A Nigerian national, Emmanuel Chenedu, has been arrested with 35 tubes of ‘Italian White’ substance hidden in his stomach, Deputy Director for Operations at the Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA), Alfred Chelley confirmed here Wednesday.

“As you are aware, the DEA under this new administration pledged to fight dugs by hereby making Liberia a drug free nation. On Saturday, June 9, the DEA arrested a Nigerian, Emmanuel Chenedu at the Roberts International Airport. He travelled with 35 tubes of Tabwhite or Italian White concealed in his stomach,” he told a press conference at the DEA office in Jallah Town.

Suspect Chenedu, who is visiting Liberia for the first time, was arrested for the drugs weighing 25 kg, worth over US$17,000.

“Based on suspicion, he was invited by our sister partner, the National Security Agency for questioning. He came to the country with only one plastic bag in his hand, and this is his first time in the country. He was throwing a couple of symptoms that traffickers do show. Based on that, we decided to arrest him and we found the substances in him. He told us that he is a soccer player,” Mr. Chelley explained.

The suspect was expected for handover with his FOC to court for prosecution in accordance with the law.

Chenedu who admitted carrying the substance, said he did so because he was motivated by the ‘money’ associated with the deal.

“Yes I was arrested with these substances. This is not the business I do; I am a footballer. It was given to me to give to somebody. I didn’t’ have money to come here and the guys gave me money with a promise that they will give more when I bring the drugs here,” he confessed.

According to DEA authorities, drug offence is bailable under Liberian laws.
