Lawmakers To Empower Police
A joint committee of the national legislature, in an emergency session, on Thursday began probing the mayhem caused last week Thursday and Friday in Monrovia and its environs during a protest by ‘vacation job students’ over pay packets, according to House Press and Public Affairs.
He said the first branch of government would also investigate whether “unscrupulous individuals” infiltrated the protest that caused havoc and left the city vandalized.
Tens of thousands of youths under the cloak of ‘vacation students’ besieged Monrovia burning and damaging government and private vehicles and infrastructure worth thousands of dollars in protest over delay by the Monrovia City Corporation to pay them for a temporary Christmas job scheme.
Mr. Redd told this paper that key individuals within the security sector already appeared before the committee to speed up the investigation.
Rep. Edwin M. Snowe confirmed the probe and said Acting Monrovia City Mayor Mary Broh, would also appear before the committee.
House Speaker Alex Tyler told reporters Sunday that government would fully implement the report of the probe panel, warning: such incident should “worry every Liberian”.
“It should worry all of us like every well-meaning Liberian. Because Liberia should be peaceful at all times,” he said after the joint committee was appointed.
