FBI Enters 7 Nov. Riot Probe
One agent from the American FBI (Federal Bureau of Investigation) has arrived here to assist the Independent Commission of Inquiry chaired by revered Catholic nun Sister Mary Laurene Browne to probe the 7 November riot that left one person killed and seriously threatened the runoff presidential election on 8 November 2011.
Without disclosing further details, Sister Mary Laurene told reporters Monday that the FBI expert would focus on discovering origins of the gunshot (s) that killed young Liberian Mohammed Kromah.
She said her commission has 60 days to complete the new probe, which is meant to bring the alleged perpetrator(s) to justice.
Shortly after the riot that originated on the compound of the opposition Congress for Democratic Change, President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf appointed the Independent Commission of Inquiry to probe the mayhem.
The probe panel was then mandated to make recommendations meant to help heal the country and give its citizens a sense of belonging to ‘one nation’ despite having diverse political affiliations.
After the government discovered a ‘new evidence’ Sister Mary Laurene’s the discovery of new evidence commission was mandated to investigate it and make an addendum to the initial report.
Based on the undisclosed ‘new evidence’, President Sirleaf mandated the panel to continue investigation and submit an addendum to its initial report.
Amongst its first findings, the commission initially reported that (CDC), based on its activities prior to the elections, was not prepared to accept defeat. The Commission placed ‘greatest’ responsibility for the riot on the CDC, which left one person killed. The report also said the police was provoked.
Sister Mary Laurene Browne told reporters Monday that international experts have been assisting her commission to probe the ‘new evidence’.
According to the Catholic nun, the President’s mandate aims at ensuring implementation of counts 8.1.4 and 8.1.9 in the recommendations submitted in the initial report.
