Gay Activists Lay Low
Self-styled exponent campaigner for the legalization of gay rights and same sex marriage in Liberia Tuesday affirmed that members of his group have gone into hiding for fear of their lives, but vowed to continue their advocacy.
Speaking to this paper from his hideout, chief executive officer Leroy Archie Ponpon of the Movement for the Defense of Gay and Lesbian Rights (MODEGAL), said, “We have gone into hiding because of public outrage and threats of attacks on our lives.”
Last week, Mr. Ponpon and his deputy, Abraham K. Kamara, narrowly escaped the wrath of an irate mob (university students) on the Capitol Hill and Fendell campuses of the University of Liberia safe for police officers who promptly rescued them.
On Tuesday, Mr. Ponpon Tuesday denied earlier claims that MODEGAL possessed adequate financial wherewithal to ensure legalization of same sex marriage in the country.
Instead, he said: “Although the advocacy is being financed from my meager resources as a judicial worker, we will continue it for the good of our country.”
Moreover, Mr. Ponpon’s gay rights advocacy has attracted widespread condemnation from intellectual groups, legislators as well as callers on radio talk shows with some threatening anyone attempting to legalize such an act in the country.
Meantime, the chair of the National Movement Against Same Sex Marriage in Liberia (NAMASSEM), Benjamin Y. Wehye has called for a mass rally in Monrovia on 26 January against the gay rights advocacy, which he calls “a devilish act”.
“We (NAMASSEM) are calling on all well meaning Liberians to wear white attire and hold a black cloth during the march against possible legalization of gay practices in Liberia. The march will begin at Fish Market and climax at the Capitol to petition our legislators not to allow any bill that will promote such an act which is not in conformity with our Liberian and African cultures,” Mr. Wehye announced.
