Couple Booked
Banks in the country continue to incur colossal losses prompting the dragging of those accused of bank theft to court, as the latest fraud involves a former employee of Access Bank and his fiancée, who are accused of stealing over US$225,000.
The state indicted defendant Denial A. Maxwell and fiancée Felecia Davis along with Lorpu Dennis in 2011 for allegedly stealing US$225,125.00 from the Access Bank branch in Sinkor.
Except for Lorpu Dennis, who is still at large, co-defendant Denial A. Maxwell and Felecia Davis are on a criminal appearance bond, preventing them from remand at the Monrovia Central Prison.
According to their 3-page indictment, co-defendant Denial A. Maxwell resigned last April as Banking Operation Officer and IT Business Analyst, responsible to collect users’ complaints.
It claims that he (Denial A. Maxwell) opened six separate accounts in both his name and that of his fiancée at the bank sub-branch on 21st Street in Sinkor.
The indictment explains that Maxwell, being a former employee who was familiar with the bank’s system, logged unto a computer and stole the total of US$225,125.00.
It alleges that US$201,455.00 of the missing money was credited to Maxwell’s account, while the balance of US$23,670.00 was credited to Felecia Davis’s account.
The indictment accused Maxwell of using his “mastery of the computer to fraudulently amass money and open accounts for his fiancée as well as his affiliate Lorpu Dennis for his dubious act.”
The defendants have admitted doing the withdrawals, but said they drew from their personal accounts.
According to the indictment, the action by the defendants is in violation of 4LCLR, Title 26, Section 15.51 (a); and 4LCLR, Title 26, Section 2.2 (b); and 4LCLR, Title 26, Section 15.61 (b) and (g); and 4LCLR, Title 26, Section 15.54; of the statutory laws of Liberia.
