Potential Threat Looms
Finance Minister nominee, Mr. Amara Konneh has alerted that failure to make strong interventions in addressing concerns of Liberia’s youthful population could pose a potential threat to democracy in the country.
Min. Konneh told Senate confirmation hearings Wednesday that unemployment in Liberia, especially among young people, requires urgent intervention.
“The young people! The dire circumstances of unemployment and vulnerable employment in Liberia, especially among young people, require urgent interventions.
“If strong and deliberate interventions are not devised and implemented immediately, the country’s democratic gains could be reversed by potential threats of organized violence, increased crime, societal dysfunction and the increasing disintegration of the Liberian family structure,” he warned.
He, therefore, urged the Senate to confirm him, promising that if confirmed, he “will use fiscal instruments to address the issues and concerns of the young people by employing long term measures”.
“...It is only a long-term market-driven youth development strategy that will fully address this challenge,” he explained.
Mr. Konneh also promised that, if confirmed, he would work with other ministries in the first 100 days to propose a “multi-track job creation” program targeting 20,000 youths and entrepreneurs per annum to the President and cabinet as another means of solving the problem.
