One Shot Dead

Five persons are confirmed arrested in connection with the death of a man, identified as Melvin Maxim, apparently embroiled in a land dispute in Nimba County.

Police spokesman George Bardue on Wednesday affirmed the five suspects to New Democrat as Sam Zarkama (66), Martin Paye (37), Daniel Vokar (62), Jackson Gborkiayee (42) and Junior Larvela (24).

He said the suspects were allegedly involved in a shooting incidence in Yeasorn and Korpi villages in Nimba County over a land feud that left three persons seriously wounded.

According to the police mouthpiece, Boy Randall, 26, and Richard Vokar, 53, sustained injuries and are currently admitted at the Ganta Methodist Hospital while the body of Melvin Maxim discovered in the bush near the scene of the disputed land.

He also said a single barrel gun and a plastic bag were found beside Melvin’s body.

“We cannot say much now because our men are on the scene conducting investigation while the suspects are being detained at the Sanniquellie police station,” Bardue added.

Following the protracted civil war that uprooted thousands of people from their original areas of residence, land disputes have been a bone of contention, seriously putting the inhabitants of Nimba and other counties at loggerheads.
