Bad Roads Plague
A delegation from Kuwait is expected here soon to conclude details for the pavement of the Lofa Road, which stretches into Sierra Leone, President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf has disclosed.
Responding to several requests from Lofa citizens in Voinjama over the week for a road network to enhance movement of people and trade, the President promised an agreement has been reached with the oil-rich kingdom, and that work is expected to begin soon.
Chiefs and elders of the six districts of Lofa told President Sirleaf that bad and impassable roads in the county, once the country’s breadbasket, continue to hamper economic activities and recovery.
In a prepared statement, the citizens informed the President if Lofa is to continue being the country’s breadbasket or improve on its agricultural activities, the farm-to-market road network and the Gbarnga-Lofa highway should be paved.
“Madam President, if you are to appreciate us for electing you for the second term, the biggest gift will be our roads,” Supt Galakpai Kortimai told the President in Salayea District Monday.
President Sirleaf told the citizens that the Kuwait Fund has agreed to implement the contract. She added that a delegation from the Fund is expected to arrival here this year to do assessment on the road.
Speaking to citizens of the Quardu-Gboni District, she acknowledged that people of Lofa County “walked on footpaths, used motorbikes and other forms of transportation to vote for me and I will not forget that”.
She assured the citizens that the government will work with the Lofa Legislative Caucus to assist the county with development programs.
She presented US13000 to Salayea and Zorzor Districts and US6000 to the Quardu-Gboni Districts, but suggested that the money be used to construct a project to remember the Unity Party Government as a legacy.
