Traditional Chiefs Convene Today

Hundreds of chiefs and traditional leaders from across Liberia are set for a six-day forum that opens here today at the Samuel K. Doe Sports complex in Paynesville to discuss the importance of the country’s traditions and cultures.

Their discussions will particularly focus the place of ‘Sande Society,’ in Liberian culture following its demonization by Montserrado County Supt. Grace Kpan as being “evil”, putting the female society under the spotlight of debate in the past two months.

The forum aims to sensitize traditional leaders about the importance and relevance of the decentralization of Liberian cultures and traditions over which they should take full ownership.

Most of the estimated 200 chiefs expected to participate at the forum were seen yesterday at the Ministry of Interim Affairs engaged in registration and accreditation formalities.

President Ellen Johnson-Sirleaf is expected to address the opening of the forum, which is convening under the auspices of the Ministry of Interim Affairs.

The Director of Press and Public Relations at the Ministry of Internal Affairs, Mr. Charles Jlateh told this paper yesterday that the chiefs would be fully empowered to give respect and prominence to the cultures of Liberia.
