10 UL Students Charged With

Police have charged ten students of the University of Liberia with rioting, criminal mischief, aggravated assault and disorderly conduct, and forwarded them to court for trial.

The students were arrested Wednesday on the main campus of the University of Liberia when riot erupted during a student leadership campaign involving two rival parties. The ensuing violence left several students injured and three vehicles damaged from stone throwing.

Those sent to court include Isaac Williams, George Sallay, Gayflor Flomo, Clifford Nyenpan, George Yokaneh, Prince Magbenie, Emmanuel Gbawaquinga, Rawlin Jardia, and Morris Bamba.

The rioting students blocked the smooth flow of traffic and caused pedestrians to run helter-skelter.

As if that was not enough, on Thursday, the students besieged the campus, throwing stones and other harmful missiles that forced officers of the Liberia National Police (LNP) assigned at the university to seek cover at the Capitol Building.

Persistent “political conflict” between the campus parties SUP and STUDA ahead of student leadership elections scheduled for today brewed the renewed campus violence that left several students injured, and pedestrians stranded for hours, while the Capitol By-pass was clogged with massive traffic.

A police officer that spoke to this paper on condition of anonymity said the peace officers are in readiness to quell the situation, hinting that a few more arrests were made Thursday.
