NEC Warns Political Parties

With exactly two weeks gone into campaigning for legislative and presidential
candidates in the impending elections, the National Elections Commission (NEC) has warned political parties and politicians to remain law-abiding and refrain from activities that could disrupt the smooth conduct of business in the country. The warning followed the traffic disorder created throughout Monrovia and its environs on Friday when thousands of animated CDC supporters turned out to welcome their presidential candidate, Cllr. Winston Tubman, and his running mate, Amb. George M. Weah, from America. Speaking Monday at a press conference, NEC chair, Mr. James Fromayan, warned political parties and independent candidates that it is “unacceptable” to allow their activities to infringe on the rights of other citizens. “It is unacceptable for marches to disrupt the activities of other citizens or to impede the smooth conduct of business,” he emphasized. Though he stated that NEC will not take any actions against the CDC for what many described as “raucous” behavior invaliding the banging of vehicles by some CDC zealots, Mr. Fromayan insisted that political parties should remain within the confines of the law. “...Remain in the confines of the law while holding political rallies and refrain from banging vehicles, hurling of insults and undertaking other riotous actions,” he said, and expressed optimism that the remaining campaign weeks will continue to be peaceful with a non-violent character exhibited by all actors. Meanwhile, NEC has also declared nominations of candidates for the impending elections opened. Mr. Froyaman said the nomination spans 20 July to 15 August 2011.
