Condemnations continue to reverberate against remarks by CDC secretary general,
Mr. Acarous Gray saying that the ruling Unity Party “will govern its partisans while the CDC will govern CDCians”.
At a press conference last Wednesday, Mr. Gray demanded the dismissal of NEC chair James Fromayan and restructuring of the commission as precondition for CDC’s participation in the runoff election scheduled on November 8.
He further told the NEC not to print the photos and names of the party’s standard-bearer, Cllr. Winston Tubman and his running mate, Mr. George Weah, on the ballot papers for the impending election.
When asked whether that meant a boycott of the runoff election, he replied: The (ruling) Unity Party “will govern its partisans while the CDC will govern CDCians”. If Ellen (President Johnson-Sirleaf) wants a bitter Liberia, we will give her a bitter Liberia.”
But the coalition of civil society youth groups is up in arms condemning Mr. Gray’s statement as “unpatriotic, undemocratic, non-nationalistic and divisive”.
At a press conference here Thursday the groups urged all dissatisfied political parties to seek redress through legal means.
The coalition under the umbrella “Right to Vote Coalition (RITVOC) includes women, youths and students against electoral violence from the Mano River Women Peace Network (MARWOPNET), Federation of Liberian Youth (FLY) and the Liberia National Student Union (LINSU), National Muslim Students Association, Liberian Motorcyclist Transport Union, and the Liberia Council of Churches Youth Desk, which warned against actions and utterances that could create chaos and plunge Liberia into turmoil again.
Their press statement read by Mr. Prince M. Korvah, president of FLY, said remarks by CDC’s Secretary General Gray was “unpatriotic, undemocratic and non-nationalistic” that could undermine peace in the country.
The coalition urged all citizens and residents to join its grass root efforts in promoting violence free elections in Liberia.
