Yearning for greater say in matters relating to their welfare, Liberian youths Wednesday urged their leaders to practice transparency and accountability.

The head of the Federation of Liberian Youths, Mohammed Nasser, told journalists at a National Youth Audit Forum at a local hotel that it is necessary for those managing County Development Funds to be transparent and accountable.

“One of the reasons why we gathered here today is that we want the youths of this country to raise critical questions on those issues.

“We organized this forum because many of our youths are not understanding how the county development funds are being handled across the country. Most of the youths do not understand what is going on,” Mr. Nasser noted.

“If they do not have insight on those things that are happening in their various counties, how would they speak out? Therefore our goal is to provide that understanding so that they could have a greater say in matters that affect them,” he pointed out.

The forum, which assembled various youth leaders from the 15 counties, also aimed at preparing youths to read financial statements and various reports from county authorities.

“We expect that this discussion will lead to transparency and accountability. It will also help to reduce corruption and clarify some misunderstanding between youth leaders and their county officials, especially on financial matters,” Mr. Nasser added.
