Read More...Power Struggle Ends CDC’s Hopes For Tandanpolie’s Seat

Ongoing bitter power struggle has squashed the Congress for Democratic Change’s hopes of feeding a candidate in the June by-election for filling the seat of its late Representative, Moses Tandanpolie.
Up press time, officials at the National Elections Commission (NEC) were holding meetings on the party’s fate, but sources told this paper that the party’s fate is sealed because it has missed the deadline.
Senator Geraldine Doe Sherif, the recognized chairperson for CDC, told this paper late Monday that the impasse between her and other party officials is unlikely to be resolved, now that the party is 3 days behind the official deadline for the submission of a candidate.
Although the CDC rejects Senator Sherif as its chair, NEC has ruled that she is legally recognized chair of the party responsible for submitting candidates along with the party Secretary General, Mr. Acarious Gray.
Sources say the official deadline for the submission of the candidate’s package was Friday, at 5:00 p.m. But sources within the party and NEC revealed to this paper that the CDC arrived at the NEC Bardnersville office at 5:30 p.m.
Geraldine Doe-Sheriff, CDC’s official chair, confirmed the report Monday afternoon, and noted that the issue of the registration of their candidate has not been addressed despite the expiration of the deadline three days after.
“No. NEC has not accepted the package of the CDC, and as we all know, Friday was the deadline for the submission of the registration package,” she said in a sad tone.
She attributed the “unfortunate” situation to the refusal of the party’s Secretary General to recognize her as chair of the CDC despite an official communication from NEC declaring her as the recognize chair of the CDC.
“Due to the continuous refusal of some executive members in the party to accept me as legitimate chairman, NEC did not accept their nomination package,” she reiterated.
Rep. Accarious M. Gray refused to comments on the matter via cell phone, but instead invited this paper’s reporter to his office for a conference on the matter.
