The rounding up of sex workers from the streets of Monrovia and its environs for skills training programs continuities as dozens of them were rounded up early Saturday morning from entertainment centers in the city and its suburbs.
President Ellen Johnson had ordered removal of these girls and adolescent women from the streets and placement at skills training and rehabilitation centers.
The Public Relations officer at the Ministry of Gender and Development, Ms. Tete Kanneh said the exercise is in full swing but on a gradual basis.
Police sources say a total of 110 street girls were rounded up on the first day of the exercise and taken to the YWCA (Young Women’s Christian Association).
Areas visited by the police included the notorious Samoa Bar at Air Field, Sly Entertainment Center, 24-Hour Entertainment Center and Shark’s Junction, also at Air Field in Sinkor.
Police spokesman George Bardue told this paper that the girls rounded up are screened and placed at identified skills training centers for rehabilitation.
The main hubs of prostitutes in Monrovia are Carey, Gurley, Center, Broad and Randall Streets where many roam at night virtually naked.
