In its ongoing plans to empower Liberian entrepreneurs, Executive Governor
J. Mills Jones of the Central Bank of Liberia says he will support a 26,000 garment workers union for greater productivity.
Speaking at the Liberia National Tailors, Textiles, Garments & Allied Workers Union Wednesday, Dr. Mills Jones noted that a vital component of the CBL’s programs to support important sectors of the economy is its initiatives to capacitate this union, which has about 26,000 members in all fifteen counties.
At the Union’s workshop convened at Boatswain Jr. High School on Jamaica Road, Bushrod Island, Governor Jones concretized CBL’s support to the union by means of providing L$350,000 in grant to facilitate the hosting of the workshop where one of its staff served as a facilitator.
The Union has organized a training workshop under the theme, Tailors Accessing Micro-Finance loan From the Central Bank and their Responsibility and Obligations To the Union. About 10,000 members are expected to benefit from the training.
Additionally, the CBL has consented to work with the union to provide access to financial resources through its SME stimulus package to enable them procure raw materials, machinery and equipment.
After building its capacity, the union should be primed to produce school uniforms and produce other industrial garments to the military and other state operators. The CBL is also working with the union to facilitate its transition to a credit union whereupon it should be able to meet basic requirements to access funding under the recently launched Loan Extension and Availability Facility.
