Government officials bent on politicking for 2017 instead of focusing on the national agenda for deliverables risk early exist from their positions as President Ellen Johnson-Sirleaf has threatened to dismiss them.
“Oh yes, I will ask them to step aside,” the president asserted during an exclusive interview with the FrontPage newspaper recently.
“They want to start pursuing their political goals that is their right but please step aside; let me find somebody else who can enable me to get my development goals achieved,” she said.
The president said her government has made progress since assuming power on 16 January 2012, but said: “W have a huge agenda in the next three to four years…”
“I don’t intend to be a lame duck. I know that at some point, we get close to 2017… you know… this place is going to be a political environment and there could be very little that I can do but I also hope to be an influencing factor in the succession and that is why I must achieve my development goals,” she added.
The Liberian leader said she declared August for public officials not travel in order to get prepared for a cabinet retreat soon.
“I want them to use this month to get all of them ready so when we get into October when the dry season starts we can hit the ground running. I have told them, they have accepted.”
However, she said some cabinet ministers have asked waiver and exceptions, which she will study “on a case by case basis in term of the benefits to the country.”
