Barely 48 hours after police chief, Col. Chris Massaquoi admitted that escalation in armed robberies before the yearend festivities has overwhelmed the police force, helpless residents of the Doe Community on Bushrod Island were in tears Monday night after armed gangs stormed their area, shot three persons and made away with several valuable belongings.
“There was a volley of gunfire in this community last night. The armed men ordered us to go into our houses or they would shoot us to death. We had to obey, obey and obey,” one nervous resident told this paper.
The hair-raising situation occurred at about 8:pm (Monday) in the sub Dry Land area in Doe Community where frightened proprietors of business and entertainment centers immediately closed for the rest of the night for fear of being looted.
One of the victims, Prince Tandapollie, 21, was shot on the leg after the assailants fired three rounds in the air, frightening residents to take cover indoors, so they would not identify the criminals during their callous operation.
The armed robbers stole one laptop, DVD players and several cellphones they demanded from the residents.
“One of the armed robbers fired close range near my ears two times before firing me on my leg,” Prince told this paper in the sub Dry Land area in Doe Community as he lay in pains from the gunshot wounds.
Prince said when the robbers entered the yard they ordered him to pack the phones he was charging in his brother’s booth or they would shot him dead.
“When they entered the shop, they told me to pack all of the phones we were charging for customers. One of them was standing over me while the other was in the darkness looking around. After they took away the items, they shot me in the leg. They fired more rounds in the air while I was going away,” Prince said in lamentation.
Elsewhere in the community, Melvin Nyamba was shot twice in his back and once in his rib, but was later taken to JFK hospital for treatment.
Lawrence Nyamba, a brother to Melvin, said while they were watching video, he heard the sound of gunfire in the back of his yard only to see his bleeding brother being rushed in the house.
Witnesses said a female resident was admitted at a nearby clinic for treatment after she was seen bleeding apparently from bullet wounds.
Deputy Police Director for Operation Abraham Kromah reportedly dispatched a squad of police officers in the community, but there were no reports of immediate arrests.
