Vigilance

Following reports that Ivorian dissidents attacked military barracks in Cote d’Ivoire, Defense Minister Brownie Samukai has ordered Liberian security forces to be vigilant at our common border with Cote d’Ivoire.

Minister Samukai told a press conference Tuesday: “Liberian security forces are under strict instructions to dismantle any military camps with dissidents activities as well as carry out cordon and search operations along the border.”

He said the mission of the security forces along the border “is to ensure the territorial integrity of Liberia and that no armed dissidents cross into Liberia. Any one dissident found on Liberian territory should be interdicted and arrested.”

The warning follows the arrest of 6 Ivorian dissident soldiers upon retreating into Liberia after they attacked the Pekan Military Barracks in Cote d’Ivoire.

Minister Samukai said security forces arrested Komande Mohegan Valery from Douandru Bloleguin. He was the trainer and Juju performer for the dissidents.

Others are Paul George, leader of the insurgents who attacked the Pekan Military Barracks, Edourd Ourogbo Nioule, Junior Noiule, Badison Toue and Frank O. Nioule.

Defense Minister Samukai repeated that two months ago government ordered the closure of the border and alluvial mining activities, and ensured the deployment of military and police forces at the Liberian side of the border.

He explained that all of the moves were in the spirit of stabilizing the situation at the common border.

“We had meetings with Cote d’Ivoire authorities and UN missions on both sides. Discussions were taken and I believe that the Ivorians are taking the necessary steps.”

“We are now providing them more information to be able to address their problem. We believe that the kind of corporation we had is extremely important and essential.”
