The 53rd National Legislature Tuesday passed a bill establishing the National Traditional Council of Liberia, empowering it to serve as a legitimate advisory body to the presidency, and a conduit through which disputes are harmonized for peaceful co-existence amongst Liberians.
The House of Representatives voted concurrence on the new legislation following the conclusion of hearings on it by the House’s Committee on Internal Affairs.
After the introduction of the act in the Upper House, Senior Senator Jewel Howard-Taylor (Bong County), who is also a strong member of Liberia’s traditional community, presented the bill concerning the Traditional Council of Liberia to the Senate, where it received full endorsement.
Hence, the Lower House on Tuesday concurred with the House of Senate, forwarding Act to the Executive for appropriate action.
Traditional chiefs and elders concluded a weeklong meeting last week in Monrovia where they were sensitized on decentralization of governance in the country.
One cardinal element in their 13-point resolution was the establishment of the National Traditional Council of Liberia.
Amongst other things, the new act wants to make the National Traditional Council of Liberia a legitimate advisory body to the presidency, and would also serve as a conduit through which disputes are harmonized for peaceful co-existence amongst Liberians.
Most of the lawmakers, including House’s Committee chairman on Internal Affairs, Rep. Ballah G. Zayzay (Margibi), presented concurrent views on the Bill.
“We need to give our traditional chiefs and elders the chance to handle disputes amongst our people. These have helped us in the past. They have handled most of the crucial issues in the past. I believe giving them legitimacy would even strengthen their work and also promote peace and unity in our country,” he said.
