UP Youth Wingers are Angry : Want Jobs From Government

The governing Unity Party has come under severe criticism from its youth wing venting its anger against the government for not doing enough to employ the youths and showing weaknesses in the fight against corruption.

At a news conference in Monrovia Monday, the secretary general of the UP Youth Congress, Henry D.Z Yanquoi accused the government of President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf of not doing enough to fight corruption by prosecuting officials implicated in the act. According to him, the government has, in fact, been involved in recycling corrupt officials in the government.

Flanked by UP executives of 17 electoral districts of Montserrado County, he said the fight against corruption remains on a “mere paper tiger.” According to him, the government’s reconciliation effort also remains elusive as many party members are without jobs.

“While it remains true that the current occupant of the presidency is the offspring of the UP, it is also an arguable fact that the current structure of the government, particularly the Executive branch does not enjoy the endorsement of the party leadership. For us, this action does not only strongly undermine the and contradict article 17 of the party’s constitution, but rather threatens Madam Sirleaf’s much anticipated reconciliation drive which again in our mind is plastered with a huge level of insincerity and dishonesty,” the chief scribe of the UP Youth Congress said.

He said by ignoring the doctrine of party-government relationship, President Johnson Sirleaf has “excluded the entire youth and women structures of Montserrado County; and about 95 per cent of the 15 counties’ leadership from the current set up, this we believe is a recipe for a serious political disfiguration.”

According to him, little or nothing is being done by the President to realize her job strategy, thereby leaving thousands of Liberians jobless. “There is a gap between our party and the President. This government does not resemble UP government. The reason is simple: you can’t have a government where county and youth chairpersons are crying for jobs. These are people that have the admiration of the partisans.”
